investigation report
introduction
I did this assignment on Feb 26, 2014. The purpose of it was to write a logically accurate report.
reflection
I think the most difficult thing is to narrate the fact and the evidence like a detective, and at the same time, write my own opinion persuasively. I did well in telling the facts and finding the evidence, but organizing them together was hard. If I can write this report again, I'll try harder in telling my opinion more logically. I learned how a detective writes an investigation report.
Investigation Report
To: Wan Yuan Chief of Police
From: Detective Wendy
Subject: Arthur Smith Murder
At about midnight, Arthur Smith was found dead by his wife Queenie Smith in the first floor of his house. The autopsy has concluded that he died from a wound on the head, and he’d been drunk. He was lying face up, still had the glass in his hand in front of the stairs. I found that something was being cooked in the kitchen. Before Queenie came back home and found Arthur dead, she had a tiff with him. She went to the country club for a party, left there for home before one in the morning, and invited a few friends to her home. Her friends got to her house about ten minutes after Queenie, which means Queenie doesn’t have an alibi in that ten minutes. Queenie said that her husband slipped and fell on the stairs when he was coming down for another drink.
In the first evidence, Arthur Smith was lying face up. While according to what Queenie said, he fell down from the stairs when he was coming down from the upstairs, his body would be lying face down, not face up. The body can be lying face up only if he was going up stairs or was put by some other ways. So it’s different from what Queenie said.
Secondly, the carpet on the stairs and on the floor at the bottom of the stairs was undisturbed. Whereas if Arthur was slipped and then fell on the stairs, usually the carpet would be messed up. So Queenie is not telling the truth.
Thirdly, Queenie said he was drunk when he slipped from the stairs, and our autopsy found it’s true that he’d been drunk, so Queenie was telling the truth about this.
Fourth, the glass in Arthur’s hand was unbroken. If as Queenie said he fell from the stairs, in very high possibility that the glass would break. Therefor we suspect what Queenie said was not right.
Last but not least as I observed, the candles and the mirror were unmoved, and the wall seemed untouched at all. Mr. Arthur was holding the glass in his left hand. If he was coming down from upstairs with not really clear mind, usually he would touch and lay his weight on the wall to keep his balance. He was drunk, so the candles and the mirror would be moved, and probably some scratching marks might be left on the wall. We couldn’t find any of these evidences, so we suspect Queenie was telling a lie.
To conclude, I suspect Queenie has been telling a lie and Mr. Arthur didn’t slip or fall from the stairs.
